In 2012 a Colorado couple, patrons of a particular bake shop, set their wedding date. They went to their favorite bakery to order a wedding cake for their special day but the baker, who knew them as repeating customers, refused.  His reason: these customers were a gay couple and the baker was a Christian who claimed baking a wedding cake for a gay couple went against his religious beliefs.

Hog wash!

The baker’s refusal was a crime of discrimination but much worse than that was his sin against the teachings of Jesus. He was heralded as a hero of Christianity in national headlines that caused strife and furthered the divide between God and His people. Jesus left us with that one new, and greatest of all commandments – to love one another. The baker must have forgotten John 13: 34-35,,,,,“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

So, how does the guidebook of Christianity, the Bible, describe and prescribe Christian love?

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

Jesus would have baked the cake!
